There was something a little thrilling about the art of stealing. Bee had been hurting for cash again. Then again there wasn't a day that went by that she wasn't hurting for cash.
The difference was this time, a pretty red scarf at the store had caught her eye. She thought Peter (whom she'd forgiven for whatever he'd done to piss her off) might like the color on her. She could tie it in her hair or around her neck and it'd flap in the wind as they raced to The Can or to Stargazer's Peak and play some backseat bingo.
Home had been rather dull lately anyways. With her mom pregnant again she wasn't looking forward to be shuffled to the back again. That always happened when a new Poplawski entered the world. The scraps of affection and attention her parents showed her got smaller and smaller. Her siblings somehow remained on the straight and narrow. Bee didn't know how they did it. Seemed kind of boring to do the same thing everyday. Church, school, eat and sleep. Repeating over and over.
Bee wanted to do what she wanted, consequences be damned. It wasn't like anyone at home would remember her if she just up and disappeared one day.
No. Bee was planning to make a name for herself. Something amazing, she was sure it would be, though what 'it' was, she didn't know. For now she was sticking in school (except when she didn't feel like going). It was something to do; a way for her parents to give a damn.
Speaking of school, the benefit of going to Our Lady of Perpetual Responsibility was the uniform. Bee was dressed like any angelic Catholic schoolgirl, navy-blue plaid skirt to her knees, a sharp blazer with the school emblem on the breast pocket, tie, white blouse and a nice pair of shoes. It was a common sight, especially right now after school when the girls went to Horseshoe Plaza with spending money and the incentive to meet the boys from St. Felix. Bee hadn't actually gone to school today, but with her book bag over her shoulder, she blended in with the throngs of students. It was great when you didn't want people giving you the hairy eyeball when you're trying to pinch a few new items.
Bee casually ducked into the store where she'd seen the scarf. She looked at this and that, browsing a bit before meandering toward the table of scarves. She picked it up, pretended to look at it while making sure the coast was clear. And when the sales lady was busy with another girl, she quickly shoved the scarf into her bag and strolled away from the table.
Still in the store, she continued to 'browse'. Her hand smoothed out a really cute sweater.
Come to think of it, she had nothing to wear with her new scarf.
