LAS VEGAS CENSUS PLEASE FILL OUT THIS FORM AND RETURN BY MAIL. SHOSHANNA ROSENFELD BASIC INFORMATION
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION HAIR COLOR AND STYLE: Anna is a natural brunette, but since moving to Las Vegas her hair has lightened. There are golden highlights where it used to be dark brown and in the summer her hair is naturally lighter. When she is at work her hair is always up, either in a tight ponytail or bun. It is part of how she demands to be taken seriously and treated with respect. She is not like the other girls - she doesn't dance for the pleasure of men. She is a teacher and a professional. However, when she's home, Tony demands she wears it out. He prefers her looking more classically feminine. Her hair is a good indicator for her state of mind. When things are not going well at home, which is more often than not, her hair is immaculately kept because she puts extra effort in presenting herself to the world in such a manner. When her hair is looking a little more disheveled or not quite as tidy - it's a good sign. It shows she is more relaxed, more comfortable - and showing her true self. It is a look she shares with almost no one these days as she walks a dangerous line between the law and Las Vegas' underbelly. EYE COLOR: A startlingly bright blue, just like her mother's eyes. Anna uses her eyes as a defensive measure. She has become very good at distracting the men in her life with them. She has become a very good liar and has learned to use them to her advantage. Unlike many others, who use their eyes as windows to the souls - Anna uses hers as mirrors. She has learned to conceal her real thoughts and emotions from ever reaching her eyes. The only problem being that she is afraid she might never be able to reveal them again. BODY BUILD: From the time she was able to walk - Shoshanna was taught to dance. She has lived and breathed dance her entire life. And she has the body to show for it. Lean and muscular - the curves that were once a curse to her dancing have now, ironically, become a blessing. Because as a high-ranking mobster's wife, she is expected to look a certain way. She is a little tall for women of the time - standing at 5'7. GET UP: Anna is a creature of duality. When she is on the clock, she dresses in an almost masculine manner. It is her own way of demanding respect and to be taken seriously by her peers - and by the men at work. She is not one of the ditzier women to be leered at or flirted with. She is off limits. She is there to work and, secretly, to protect the girls. Often she has to come between a mobster who thinks her girls are their own personal play thing. And she doesn't want to get caught in a situation like that in anything that will restrict her movement. She wears tailored pants usually and a blouse. But outside of work, when she is expected to be Tony's wife before she is herself, she dresses however he wants her to dress. If he wants her in a lowneck dress and heels, she will wear it. If he wants her in lingerie or nothing at all - she will oblige. She's felt the wrath of her husband many times - and she knows its easier to oblige him than make an issue of any of his demands. And what about those rare moments? When she is able to have lunch or breakfast on her own? Something simple. She prefers neutral colors. Creams and greys and light browns. Perhaps a blue or a green here or there. But she only wears red for Tony. In truth she hates wearing red. It's too garrish for her liking - it reminds her of all the hell she has had to endure as his wife. PERSONALITY DISPOSITION: The first impression of Anna is usually one of reservation. She is calculating and always keeps her cool. That calm and controlled manner also gives her a sense of authority over some people. Although she won't demand the upper hand - she will take it in her own way when she sees fit. With the responsibility of her job also comes a sense of power that she tries to act on as much as possible. And as a teacher of wayward young girls - she has to know how to wield authority in a way that is not obtruse or necessarily direct. Anna was raised in a world of strict discipline. Some people would say her childhood was one of mistreatment - but Anna disagrees. She knew how to take care of a house full of people before she even reached middle school. She could cook and clean and iron and fold and sew. Her family expected the best from her at all times - and she, in turn, expects that of herself and others. She is a perfectionist at heart and sometimes this can make her seem harsh or cold. But that's not always necessarily the case. When it comes to the girls she teaches to dance - she is very protective of them. She knows first hand the dangers of getting involved with the mobsters that own and frequent the casino and she will go to great lengths to protect them. She has a strict rule about drinking and drug use and even has the full-time girls on a curfew. A lot of them have rebelled, but the smarter ones have learned that everything Anna does is for their protection. If Anna deems a girl unfit for the lifestyle - she will fire them. And then, they are on their own. But for the girls under her wing - she will go to great lengths to protect them. In the past, she has gone to the lengths of risking Tony's wrath to keep some of the men away from her girls. And she will do it again if it is required of her. Officially she is teaching the girls how to pole dance. But she also teaches them formal techniques. In her own way she believes this is giving them an out. If there are talent agents on holiday or enjoying the casino and they see a girl they like - Anna will do whatever she can to send the girl away from this place. It is all about creating a safe environment for them. Anna would rather them run to her than try it on their own out on the streets. But deep down? Beneath her calculated and reserved nature - Anna is fierce. She is a woman who knows that she deserves better in this life - and is doing all that she can to get it. Sometimes she is afraid of walking the line she does and she is acutely aware of the risk she is taking - but she knows it's the right thing. And more importantly - she wants to stop the mob from ruining other girls' lives the way they have ruined hers. How many women have been abused in the pursuit of power for their men? Anna has seen them come and go - and she has reached her breaking point. She could be the key to bringing down the mob - and with patience, cunning and determination - she fully intends to do so. HISTORY HOMETOWN: Rüdesheim, Germany FAMILY: All deceased FRIENDS: COLT JACKSON - Close friend RECORD: Shoshanna was the first daughter for the Rosenfelds. She had an older brother, only one year her senior, Abel, whom she loved dearly. The Rosenfelds were an upper class family in Germany. She grew up in a very traditional household by the river and was raised with a good work ethic. Her mother was a piano teacher, very well respected for her craft. And her father owned one of the big wineries in town. Some of her fondest memories are of her brother chasing her through the vineyard. From a very early age - Anna wanted to dance. Her parents encouraged her craft and sent her to lessons from the time she could walk - and she took to it like a fish to water. Ballet taught her discipline and self-control - but it also allowed for her to express the creativity she inherited from her mother. When Anna was six, her two younger sisters were born. Twins! They both had curls that would drive their mother half mad from trying to untangle them. They were mischievous - and Anna and Abel loved them for it. The town they lived in was mostly spared from the invasive nature of the rest of the world. They kept up to date with local affairs - but her parents sheilded them from what was going on in Germany as they grew older. It was a conscious decision they made. They had grown up as children of war and they didn't want the same for their children. They wanted them to be kept separate from it all and to have a childhood without the taint of war. But as Anna became more and more successful and prominent in her dancing - things began to change. She was sent away at ten to attend the most prestigous dance school in the country. It was an opportunity her parents would not deny her - but it was this decision that would be the Rosenfeld's downfall. Although Anna missed her family terribly - she was an ambitious young girl and she knew that her success meant her family's success. She wrote to them every day and in return they wrote her back and sent her photographs of her brother and sisters. Abel even came up on the train to visit her a few times. And at Christmas in 1942 her whole family made the trip up to see her. Her mother brought up a keepsake that had been her grandmother's. It was a golden locket - and inside was a photograph of her family. There was an inscription in Hebrew, but unfortunately neither of her parents could read or write it. Anna knew very little of her Jewish grandmother - she had given up her mother at a young age and put her in an orphanage. But she had given the locket to her as a keepsake. And now she had passed it down to Anna. Her family left on New Year's Eve - and Anna had no idea it would be the very last time she saw them alive and well. That very night her dance troupe would be dancing for the fuhrer himself! And although she was full of nerves and excitement, she had no idea how quickly and drastically it would change the course of her life. One of the higher ups in the Nazi Party took an interest in Anna after their performance. Her and a select few girls were to attend a dinner with some of the dignitaries. Anna was so excited she wore the locket her mother had given her and her nicest dress. Of course it only took one curious man to bring her whole life to ruins. Once the locket was opened and the inscription read - she was taken away. Locked in a room she was interrogated, beaten and tortured. But she was too terrified and confused to even know what was going on. Anna's world was her dancing and her home town. The girls were not even allowed outside the building and so they were all kept separate from what was truly going on in Germany at the time. Their dance academy was in the hills of the Obersalzberg. They were shut off from the world - and so all Anna could do was sob. After checking her records - the Nazis found her family. They didn't kill Anna immediately. Instead, they kept her around as something of a slave. She spent months of torture in the secluded home of one of Hitler's favorite soldiers and endured hell there. That is, until one morning she woke up in the basement only to find her brother kneeling by her side. IHer brother had found her. With all the miles and armed men between them - he had found her. And he was here to rescue her. It was by the grace of God himself that he had found her and managed to rescue her. They ran through the woods hand in hand - both openly sobbing as they fled into the wilderness. Deep in the woods, Anna was reunited with her two little sisters. It was then that she heard what had happened since her capture. Armed men had come to the door, their mother had hidden their sisters under the planks of wood in their bedroom. Her mother had made Abel stay down there with them to protect them. Their parents had been killed in cold blood. The siblings spent that night in the wilderness, holding each other for warmth and comfort. Abel had a plan to get them out of the country. An Italian man had approached him when he'd first started trying to find out where Anna had been taken and who she was being kept by. His name was Louis and he promised to take them all safely to Italy where they could stay for as long as they liked. When Abel told the man his sister was a dancer - the man even offered to secure her a job! It was all too good to be true, but after the loss of their parents - the Rosenfeld siblings were willing to believe anything if it meant they could have hope. As dawn broke - Anna knew the men would be out looking for her. She roused her siblings and they made their way as quickly as they could through the wilderness to the nearest train station. It was almost two day's hike - but the siblings were determined. Abel and Anna carried their sisters most of the way because they were still young and afraid and slower than the elder siblings. Finally they made it to the station - and Louis was there - just as he promised he would be. He was an Italian man in his sixties - and he made Anna a little nervous. But the Nazis were hot on their heels. They had no choice but to trust him. The train arrived and as Anna went to load her sisters into the carriage first - she felt a strong hand on her shoulder. It was Louis. A word, first, Shoshanna, privately? The girl was nervous, but what choice did she have? She ushered her sisters back to Abel - who was watching the interaction with a potent mixture of confusion and suspicion. ...Your brother here killed a Nazi on his way to find you. A very popular one, in fact. And the right men will pay a pretty penny for his head. Even though it was just a whisper, Abel could smell trouble. He yelled and shoved their twin sisters towards the exit, telling them to run as he lunged at Louis. But it was too late. Louis dragged Anna onto the train kicking and screaming as two armed soldiers ran onto the platform and restrained Abel. In front of her eyes - they gunned him down. He was only fifteen. The train took off and Anna watched in horror as the two men grabbed her little sisters by their curls. Money can buy anything, Shoshanna - there is nothing in this world that comes without a price. Your brother paid the price for treason, and your sisters paid the price for your freedom The next few years were a blur for Anna. She was taken to Italy and spent a few years as Louis' plaything. It was similar to her treatment at the hands of the Nazi solder who had stolen her. She was a cook and a maid and whatever else was required of her. But one saving grace? Anna was allowed to dance - encouraged even. And it was in her dancing that she found her own escape. Anna was eighteen when she met Tony. He was Louis' grandson. He had made a name for himself in America. The mob were extending their reach and he was right at the forefront of the initiative along with his father. He was in his early twenties - and the moment he laid eyes on Anna he wanted her for himself. An agreement was made amongst the family - and Anna was told she would be going with Tony to Las Vegas. The first year in Las Vegas was strange for Anna. Tony wanted to win her over for real. He treated her well. He bought her nice clothes and took her out for fancy meals. He asked her about her home and her family and her like and dislikes. He promised to save her - and she believed him. She even grew to love him in the early days. It seemed like things were finally turning around for Anna. Tony even got his father to pay for her to go to a dancing studio. But once his father discovered her talents - he made her work in the casino...as a dancer on stage. This is where things began to go south. In order to get confident enough to wear very little in front of strange men and act like it didn't disgust her - she began drinking. Tony and his father would give her pills to relax her. They made her work long hours to earn them more money. And Tony was so jealous. He didn't want other men thinking they could own her - so he decided to claim her for his own. This was where his abusive tendencies began. The other men, the older men of the mob, had taught him well. He had to put his woman in line, wear her down and belittle her until she had no will left. Women were to be seen not heard and he treated her all too well. She said no to him on the odd occasion? Well that simply wouldn't do. And so Anna went from one captive to the next. Anna remembers her wedding day well. She was 21 and not even nearly ready to be a wife. But what choice did she have? After she became his wife, she was expected to become a mother. The months turned into years - and still no children. Of course it was her fault. Everything was Anna's fault in Tony's eyes - and so the beatings became more and more severe until she was finally forced to stop dancing. Nobody wanted to see a girl on stage who was covered in bruises. His father allowed her instead, to teach. She still had to earn her keep after all. It was a chance meeting in 1954 that would change everything for Anna - to swing the pendulum of power her way. One up-and-coming detective decided to take a risk on Anna. He had been tasked with investigating and building a case against the mob. Perceptive and cunning - he saw the duality of Anna. How she could be so demanding and strict and authoritative with her girls, but then fall into a meeker role for the men in her life. Maybe he saw in her that desire to break free. But whatever the reason - he reached out to her. He managed to catch her in a rare moment when she was alone and out of the casino. She was drinking with Colt Jackson, a man who had always been kind to her. Colt had gone to refresh their drinks and he'd sidled up to her at the bar. He didn't sugar coat anything. He promised her nothing at first but the opportunity to do the right thing. It struck a chord in Anna. How many people in her life had had the opportunity to do the right thing and instead had done nothing? It had been the death of her parents, of her brother, her sisters. She thought of the women she'd seen grow and die at the hands of the men around her. And she took his offer. She took a chance on the young detective. He stole her discretely away into a back room and they talked until almost dawn. Luckily Tony was away in Italy for that week. He hadn't wanted her to go with him - a part of her knew it was because he had a girlfriend back in Italy he thought she didn't know about. Ever since that night in 1954 she has been working for the heat to bring the mob down. It will be a long-term operation. But in exchange for her testimony and continued co-operation she has been promised what she has been seeking her whole life - freedom. A ticket to somewhere far, far away from Las Vegas. A new name and identity and a fresh start away from the horrors she has experienced so far - and the knowledge that her dedication will stop countless other girls from suffering the same fate. THE INCIDENT WHAT HAPPENED?: Anna was training her girls when it happened. The girls were convinced it was some kind of supernatural incident - but Anna will have no bar of that kind of talk. She doesn't believe in nonsense like that and she won't tolerate gossip amongst the girls about it. OOC INFORMATION
