having a party
penny had been craving a milkshake. she didn't know what it was, but the wonderful combination of what they called ice cream and milk was just the only thing she could think about. she had come to know the kind folks at peggy sue's more than she had gotten to know anyone. they really were the best of friends a girl could ask for, always making sure she was happy and full. and gladis really needed to get that hair cut she had been debating over—it would really bring out the blue in her eyes and look so stunning on her!
she raced up her shift at the hotel as quick as she possibly could with the dream of a strawberry milkshake in her mind. her hair was tossed up and she didn't have a stitch of makeup on—she never did since she'd only recently grasped the concept of lipstick. there wasn't much thought that went into what she looked like, and especially not when she had more important things to talk about. she blew into the sock hop, shaking off her sweater as she did. "hi, tom!" she greeted one of the bus boys she passed. she slid up to the counter, "hi, sugar." gladis behind the counter chirped.
"hello, gladis. hi, bill!" the cook had appeared in the window, "hiya, penny. you come to see me again?" she giggled, "of course! what do you have for me today?" "gotta new bacon burger with your name on it." she pirked up, "oh yes, please!" gladis turned to penny, "one of those and anything else?" "a strawberry milkshake, please." gladis told her it was coming right up and departed to bring it to her.
penny spun around on her stool and caught sight of the sing-song machine. she hopped up and approached it, fishing a coin out of her pocket—tom had shown her how to work the machine the second time she came here. she just thought it was wonderful, something that could bring such happiness with a click of a button! she didn't know if she'd quite gotten the hang of it because she pressed a few buttons a dozen of times before something worked. she shook her shoulders—a reaction she just couldn't help when the music reached her ears—and turned back to her stool.
she saw her burger sitting there ready for her. already! so fast! she practically flew to the stool and hunched her back, shoving the delicious burger into her mouth as though she hadn't eaten in days. she was already halfway through the sandwich when someone tapped on her shoulder. without even turning around she realized she had made a mistake. she'd just seen her milkshake out of the corner of her eye—at the seat two stools down from her. she was eating someone else's food.
