LAS VEGAS CENSUS PLEASE FILL OUT THIS FORM AND RETURN BY MAIL. CHRISTOPHER GORDON ”KIT” MCKINLEY BASIC INFORMATION
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION HAIR COLOR AND STYLE: Kit likes to keep his dark brown hair well styled. Despite his job, he’s still pretty young and likes to style himself that way. His hair is either slicked back or combed into a pompadour. EYE COLOR: Blue. They’re a little on the lighter side and look almost gray. BODY BUILD: A former army recruit, Kit keeps in excellent shape. His job involves a lot of heavy lifting and he occasionally helps out at the ranch he’s living at, which also contributes to his physical fitness. There are some scars on his body from various beatings and usually a fresh bruise or two. He tries to keep them covered if he can, mostly so he doesn’t have to answer questions. GET UP: Being a garbage man doesn’t leave a lot of money for a man to be trendy or afford ‘hip’ clothes. Kit tries. He can usually be found in jeans and T-Shirts and button down shirts. He only makes about $1.20 an hour, which isn’t much to save when there’s rent to be paid. Mostly, the clothing is worn or stained, but he tries to hide it when he can. For work, he wears a gray jumpsuit with his name embroidered on a patch, work gloves and big heavy boots. His style is more about what he can afford, rather than what’s ‘in’. PERSONALITY DISPOSITION: Bitter, jaded. Just a couple of words to describe Kit. After he was publicly outed by his lover and dishonorably discharged, Kit finds it difficult to trust anyone. There’s little anyone can do to hurt him emotionally anymore because he’s completely disinterested in forming relationships. He’s sarcastic and generally unpleasant to be around as he believes all people lie. Kit actually revels in hurting people’s feelings as he believes the world owes him for all the disgrace and shame surrounding his name. He spends a lot of time sulking about his misfortune, but has been trying to channel this into something (sort of) productive. Recently, he’s taking to helping out his landlady on her ranch to let his aggression out. Kit is very open about his sexuality, having already been forcibly outed years ago. He believes since everyone knows what he is there’s no use in trying to pretend he’s straight. He is a frequenter of Wranglers and can be often found there on any given night. He had previously been a member of the Mattachine Society when he lived in San Francisco, but broke with the group before moving to Las Vegas as he’d become disillusioned and impatience for their goals of equality. He actually didn’t mind their former ties to the Communist Party USA and would have likely joined had they not denied homosexuals. HISTORY HOMETOWN: Coventry, Vermont FAMILY: Elijah James McKinley ; Father, 50 - Attorney Stella Amelia McKinley (née Lake); Mother, 46 - Homemaker Leon Russell McKinley; Brother, 27 - Business man FRIENDS: Edward Noel “Eddie” Abel; 26 - New York City Beat Cop RECORD: Kit, as he prefers to be called, was born to Elijah and Stella McKinley on April 26, 1931. Despite the Great Depression, hitting especially hard in the small town of Coventry, Vermont, there was always a need for a lawyer. The family was able to survive mostly through luck and the kindness Elijah showed the community. He often accepted food farmed from his neighbors instead of payment for his services. He tried to instill generosity and sacrifice into his sons, however the boys grew to be rather headstrong and stubborn instead, taking after their mother’s rougher edges. Kit, as he liked to be called, had a painfully normal childhood. When the Great Depression finally ended and the United States was at war, Elijah was working reconnaissance with Allies in Europe. The boys were in elementary school. While his brother took an interest in sport, Kit was starting to get involved in the student government. He’d put on fundraisers for the war effort and was interested had a growing respect for the military. When he was 16, he used to help out a local farmer now and then in exchange for piloting lessons. However, his fascination remained with making policies, not following them. Despite a bright future and the possibility to attend university, Kit was drafted into the Korean War. Not one to shirk responsibility, especially when when it could help his future career and pay for school, Kit left for basic training in the air force in 1951. Kit had always been fully aware of his sexuality. He’d often hidden with a girlfriend or two, but was mostly focussed on schoolwork for much of his high school career. It was a problem he’d deal with later. Until he met Eddie Abel. There was something about the man that had drawn Kit in. His smile. His optimism. Kit had made it a point to befriend the man. The closer they got, the more Kit realized they had the same desires. One night, sneaking out of the dormitory, they ducked into the kitchen out of sight and Kit stole a kiss from his friend. There was hesitation before Eddie did the same and then… he ran away. It wasn’t until the morning after, when Kit was called in, that he found out that he’d been outed. No matter how many times he tried to explain himself, the damage was done. Kit McKinley was issued a blue discharge, an administrative discharge that forever marked him as gay man. The benefits of the GI Bill were out of his grasp and his options in life were limited. Instead of facing the shame back home, Kit, at 21, moved westward to San Francisco. Despite the general friendliness towards the LGBT community in San Francisco, Kit still found it difficult to find legitimate work. Most of the gay bars he tended at were often raided by the police and the blue discharge on his record made finding other work in the city next to impossible. He’d managed to find a place to live, if only through the kindness of a friend he’d made there. Kit would take any work he could get. For a short while he even prostituted himself to make ends meet. Eventually he fell in with the Mattachine Society, an activist group that had its headquarters in Los Angeles. He didn’t become too involved, not really finding any common ground, especially when their radical leftist views became more moderate. Kit had long since abandoned his interest in politics. Kit has been in town for a little over a month. He’d made the decision to search for the who ruined his life. He’d tracked Eddie down as far as Carson City and he continued on to Las Vegas, hoping for more luck in making money in the oasis. THE INCIDENT WHAT HAPPENED?: Kit’s only heard rumors about the incident, but he doesn’t seem too interested in the incident. He has enough problems in his life that he isn’t interested in having any more. OOC INFORMATION
