LAS VEGAS CENSUS PLEASE FILL OUT THIS FORM AND RETURN BY MAIL. BEATRICE “BEE” LOUISE POPLAWSKI BASIC INFORMATION
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION HAIR COLOR AND STYLE: Despite being a part of a greaser gang, Bee still has to look good for her man. Most of the time, she wears her hair in a high ponytail, tied by a scarf. But she also will sometimes style it in a bouffant or a short beehive. She also owns some pin curlers if she wants to look extra nice (or if Peter has been extra bad). She’s been keeping her hair around shoulder length. And despite a recent ‘bottle blond’ craze, Bee would much rather stick to her brunette locks. EYE COLOR: Brown BODY BUILD: Bee isn’t a pushover. She may not be muscular, but she can hold her own in a scuffle She’s pretty average and stands at around 5’6”. GET UP: The closet of one Bee Poplawski contains an essential leather jacket with the Sons of Saints logo. under the collar. It’s buried deep inside, just in case her parents happen to uncover it, but she tends to wear it everyday, even stuffing it in her bag when she leaves for school. Mostly she dresses in tight pencil skirts, tight sweaters, capris, jeans; anything that makes her look hip among her friends. As the ‘leader’ of the Soul Sisters, she likes to make sure she’s fashion forward, and showing all the right curves for her boyfriend. She still attends Our Lady of Perpetual Responsibility Catholic School, an all girls school where she has to wear a uniform (until she cuts class). Her parents want her to dress ‘more ladylike’ and hand-me-down poodle skirts and frilly dresses from church drives still find their way into her closet. She’s by no means a total tomboy, but Bee doesn’t fancy herself one of those ‘nice’ girls. PERSONALITY DISPOSITION: Having been lost in a large Catholic family, Bee has started acting out for attention from her parents. She resents them for their poverty and their schedules that often leave her in charge of her siblings. She steals, lies and basically acts as if she owns the world. In many ways she views the gang as more a family to her. While her family has been trying to get her to fall into the traditional line, Bee craves something more, something different. She loves to drive, perhaps as a means to feel closer to her father. Bee can be a loudmouth, especially to authority figures. She doesn’t like the police or her teachers or her parents. She doesn’t think any of them care about her, so she doesn’t care about them. Stealing, smoking, drinking, and having sex are fun and she’s not going to stop any of it. She can be a little abrasive to her friends, but often takes on the role of a big sister to her fellow Nuns. She’s not afraid of speaking her mind to her fellow gang members, but often takes on a gentler way of saying things. Her relationship with her on-again-off-again (etc. etc.) boyfriend, Peter, can sometimes be volatile. They break-up and make-up so often that no one can keep track of their relationship. Her whole life is about doing what she wants to do and no one being able to control her. Whether this rebellion will cause her to flame out or rise above convention remains to be seen. For now, Bee is only concerned with making herself happy and keeping the gang in check. There may be a spark of jealousy that she’s not the Vice President of Sons of Saints and is instead relegated to “girlfriend” (especially since everyone knows she’s a better driver than even Peter), but she hasn’t made a move to usurp the ‘proper order’. At least not yet. HISTORY HOMETOWN: Chicago, Illinois FAMILY: Earl Joseph Poplawski; Father, 39 - Sewer Worker Patricia Anna Poplawski (née Kowalski); Mother, 34 - Assembly Line Worker Pamela Jane Poplawski; Sister, 15 - Student at Our Lady of Perpetual Responsibility Catholic School Carl James Poplawski; Brother, 14 - Student at St. Felix Catholic School Howard Francis Poplawski; Brother, 12 - Student at St. Felix Catholic School Lucille Rose Poplawski; Sister, 8 - Student at Our Lady of Perpetual Responsibility Catholic School Stanley Lewis Poplawski; 5 - Student at St. Felix Catholic School FRIENDS: Peter is the person Bee knows she can always turn to. He was the one who got her into the the Soul Sisters and the Sons of Saints. Despite their many, many breakups, she trusts him completely. Bee is also very close with the Soul Sisters (acting as a sort of leader) and the Sons of Saints. The gangs are her closest allies and she finds them preferable to her family. RECORD: Beatrice Louis Poplawski was born March 15, 1939 in Chicago, Illinois. Her parents were very young, her mother being sixteen years old at the time, and married only when Patricia began to show. For the better part of her childhood, Beatrice was looked after by her grandparents in the tight-knit Polish neighborhood they lived in. Her mother had no aptitude and little interest in playing house and her father was trying to make ends-meet in the meatpacking industry. But opportunities were limited for the descendants of poor Polish immigrants in the city. By the time Patricia was born a year later, the family had decided to try their luck out west in the growing city of Las Vegas. The city wasn’t as paved with gold as the family had hoped. Money was tight and her parent’s lack of education wasn’t helpful in their career prospects. Things worsened as her mother had more and more children and by the time Howard was born, six year-old Beatrice was expected to start helping look after the younger ones. Her mother started working in a factory when her father shipped off to war. There was no extended family to help look after the kids and mostly they were locked in the apartment alone until their mother came home from work. In 1945, her father returned. Despite his status as a soldier, the family’s prospects didn’t improve much. Earl, haunted by what he’d seen in Poland where he’d aided his unit as an interpreter, turned to alcohol and gambling to keep his mind distracted from memories of the war. He became distant and occasionally violent with his children. It was clear that something had changed Earl after the war, but he refused to talk about it. Beatrice would often hear him screaming in his sleep or leaving in the middle of the night. One night, when she was seven, Bee followed her father out into the Las Vegas night. In her nightgown, she snuck into the back of his truck before he pulled away. From the truck bed, Beatrice watched the lights of The Strip come into view. At the time, she was awed by the glamor and brightness of the casinos. Her father stopped in front of one of them and disappeared inside. Alone outside in the cold night air, Beatrice scrambled out of the truck, frightened. She managed to sneak inside the casino, trying to find her father. A security guard caught her first. Easily she told them that her father was inside and she wanted to go home. They found Earl playing the slots and kicked him out for bringing his young daughter inside. Beatrice was at first afraid her father would become violent, but he only looked at her ashamedly. When they were driving home, he had her sit on his lap, her hands on the wheel, his on hers, guiding hers on how to drive. The car was silent, but it was the closest she’d ever felt to her father. After that night, life continued on as normal for the Poplawski’s. They were barely making ends meet and relied heavily on the church for support. Staunch Catholics, each child was a blessing, but also another mouth to feed. Beatrice began getting lost in the shuffle and her parents worked more and more. She and her siblings were enrolled in Catholic school, if only to make sure they had a strict upbringing. Beatrice couldn’t take it any longer. At age 13, she began acting out. She’d bring pins to school and pierce ears in the bathroom. She’d also leave tacks on the nuns chairs. All this earned her the nickname ‘Bee’ among her classmates. She especially started to hate the second-wave Polish immigrants turning up at Our Lady of Perpetual Responsibility. Most were the children of escaped wealthy Polish intelligentsia and political officials. While they shared ancestry, they were separated by social standing. And Bee, who never had enough to go around at home, hated them. Her relationship with her parents deteriorated. She wanted their attention and acting out was the only way to get it. She’d steal her father’s car and joy ride, steal from stores and cut class. It was when she was 15 that she met her boyfriend Peter, a member of the Sons of Saints. She admired him and officially joined the Soul Sisters not long after they started dating. Now at 18, Bee’s parent’s are expecting child number seven. They still are urging her to take responsibility for her younger siblings, to get married, and to conform to an upstanding citizen. But beyond high school graduation, Bee hasn’t exactly made a plan. She expects she’ll just keep driving with the gang. However, sometimes, she dreams of being a race car driver just like Smokey Drolet. THE INCIDENT WHAT HAPPENED?: During the blackout, Bee was hanging out at Stargazer’s Peak, necking with a boy (not Peter since they’d broken up that afternoon). While her partner seemed alarmed at the sound of the explosion and the sight of the city going dark, Bee didn’t seem to care and shut up his panic with a well placed kiss. In the days since, Bee has only started getting concerned when a few members of the gang simply vanished. OOC INFORMATION
