FREE FORM APPLICATION The Rise and Fall of Dallas Harper:
THOSE WERE THE GOOD DAYS... Born in Texas, Dallas Harper had been brought up with love and care. He was the only child of his parents who had been proud Texans through and through. His father had served in World War II and received a purple heart after losing his arm in battle. Growing up on stories of battle and glory from Dallas’ father, grandfather, and even great grandfather, the young Texan had big dreams of the military. He idolized his father and always wanted the man’s approval. The military was going to be his future and he counted down the days until he could enlist. With tales of his father’s time in the war, Dallas was imbued with a great sense of American pride. He loved his country, his father, and the state of Texas.
CHASING A BIT OF TAIL... When Dallas had gotten older, he knew he was a bit different than most of the boys his age. Aside from being a great student and thinking outside of the box, Dallas realized he was outside the norm as well. Where other guys his age had affection for the girls at school, he only found affection for those boys. Not fighting the urge, but curious about it, Dallas found other guys like him in high school. He kept it a secret and managed to keep his actions under wraps. He had more important things on his mind as high school neared to an end. Turning eighteen and joining the military was all he could think of.
HE WAS A GOOD SOLDIER... Out of school, Dallas enlisted in the military proudly. He trained hard, worked hard, and put his skills and planning to good use. He approached the battle field differently than most men which made Dallas stand out from the other soldiers. He had a knack for the military, some would say, and he was a damn good soldier. No doubt about it, not from anyone he met while serving. Fueled by the drive to make his father and his country proud, Dallas was the best that he could be and the type of soldier that the army needed. Quickly promoted Dallas was given the responsibility of a squadron in Korea and he led them well. Dallas Harper was on the path for a great military career when something went wrong.
LIFE JUST HITS YOU... SOCKS YOU IN THE FACE... There were those who had attempted to leave the squad when they were out on the battlefield in Korea. These men were afraid, cold, and suffering from the trauma of war. Dallas followed these men and spoke to them, talking them back from making such a terrible decision. However, a member of their squad had reported these deserters to Military authorities. The man who had reported this had also included Dallas' name among those who were trying to leave. Whether the man was confused or vying for Dallas' position, he wasn't sure. Not convicted of treason due to his rank and his good status up to the point of his apparent attempt at desertion, Dallas was dishonorably discharged and sent home.
THE LOSS OF EVERYTHING THAT MEANT SOMETHING... Dallas was sent back stateside and when he returned, he was met with the crippling reality that his family had believed the reason for his dishonorable discharge. His mother cried and mourned the situation as if Dallas had been killed in Korea. Dallas’ father was so filled with shame that he banished Dallas from their house and threatened to shoot him if he stepped foot on their property again. Losing his family was like a loss for Dallas. He was hurt, he was enraged, and he was alone. To have his father disown him without even hearing or believing Dallas’ side of the story was the cut that went to the bone. Soon the town heard of his dishonorable discharge and shunned him as well. For the following years, Dallas couldn’t get past the betrayal he felt from his father, family, and his hometown. He had done everything that he was supposed to do. He enlisted to make his father proud, he was a good soldier- no, he was the best soldier, and he worked really how. Dallas often wondered how life could turn on a dime so quickly- one minute he was in favor, the next he was under fire in every possible way.
LEFT WANDERING WITH NOTHING TO HOLD ON TO... Lost, angry, and all by himself, Dallas left his small town for a place where no one would recognize him. He wanted to be a stranger. He wanted to be someone nobody knew. Driving in the hot Nevada night, Dallas drove up on Las Vegas without even realizing he was on the path to the city. Captured by the lights and the fantasy of it all, Dallas decided to put new roots down in the oasis that was Las Vegas. Finding a job as lifeguard and pool boy at a casino pool, Dallas set up a nice life for himself. He created a rhythm of work, sex, drinking, and sun in the desert city. Bedding men who would come to the hotel, pouring his money back into the pool bar, and catching rays at the pool, Dallas had it easy. He lives in a mobile home parked on the outskirts of town where other tourists set down and camp.
SOCKING LIFE BACK IN THE KISSER... The problem was, Dallas still had that chip on his shoulder. Life had been so unfair to him. He was a good guy and only bad things had happened to him. He had gotten the short end of the stick no matter how honorable he acted. So why put in all the effort? It clearly did him no good. Life had been unfair to him and he was changed because of it. Dallas found himself bitter and angry, often getting into fights. He also began stealing from members at the pool with no regrets. Why should he feel bad? He had gotten no sympathy. What started as petty crimes turned into something much more. At the casino he worked at, Dallas would clear the pool at night and, just before leaving, he would put on a mask and climb balconies until he found a room who’s occupants were downstairs gambling. He’d go in through the balcony door and steal jewelry and money from those who stayed in the room. This was a regular act for him and he loved the thrill of it. He also didn’t mind the extra dough to spoil himself with. And the best thing is, the casino had no clue it was him! They were patrolling hallways, elevators, and the casino floor. No one suspected he was getting in through the balconies.
